The Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University (Unhas) hosted a guest lecture from Hanze University of Groningen, Netherlands, on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 16-17, in the KP Room of the Faculty of Nursing at 8:00 a.m. WITA. Guest lecturers from Hanze were Sanne Heinen, M.Sc, R.N. (Mental Health) and Hinke Van Der Werf, PhD., R.N. (Health Promotion). The lecture was attended by undergraduate nursing students.
Sanne Heinen, M.Sc, R.N., presented on the first day about mental health, recognizing signs of aggressive patients and handling techniques. She explained the five phases of aggressive behavior: Daily (normal) \u2013 confront with positive discussions; Initial Phase (mild anxiety) \u2013 provide attention and support; Escalation Phase (starting to increase) \u2013 divert attention and ask for their needs; Crisis Phase (verbal\/physical aggression) \u2013 seek help immediately and prioritize safety; and De-Escalation Phase (calming down but sensitively) \u2013 maintain attention, maintain a safe distance, and give time.
On the second day, Hinke Van Der Werf, PhD., R.N., presented on Health Promotion, focusing on Planetary Health. She emphasized the importance of nurses developing health literacy, capitalizing on opportunities in healthcare, and maintaining professional motivation. Hinke also explained motivational interviewing techniques as an intervention for patients with limited health literacy, including improving communication, positive validation and affirmation, active listening, exploring concerns, and concluding reflections from the conversation.
Both speakers delivered the material effectively using role-playing, making it easier for students to understand the purpose and objectives of the material. This interactive approach heightened participants’ enthusiasm, encouraging them to explore further the topics presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
