The Faculty of Nursing at Hasanuddin University (Unhas) hosted an international guest lecture at the Unhas IPTEKS Building, Tamalanrea Campus, Makassar, on Tuesday (September 1). The event featured an academic from Okayama University, Japan, who shared in-depth insights into the management of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was officially opened by Syahrul Said, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kes., Ph.D., the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at the Faculty of Nursing, Unhas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his remarks, Syahrul Said expressed his appreciation and extended a warm welcome to the guest speaker and the group of exchange students from Japan. He emphasized the importance of international collaboration in broadening the academic horizons of the Faculty of Nursing community, particularly regarding the management of chronic diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Faculty of Nursing is delighted to welcome Dr. Yuki Kajiwara, who is presenting valuable material on Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) to our students across undergraduate, master’s, and specialist programs. We hope this event fosters robust knowledge sharing, especially concerning chronic disease management. Furthermore, we are pleased to welcome four exchange students from Okayama University who will be participating in activities at Unhas for a week,” said Syahrul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attended by approximately 100 participants from various levels of nursing education, the event featured two expert speakers: Dr. Yuki Kajiwara from the Faculty of Health Sciences at Okayama University, Japan, and Abdul Majid, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Sp.Kep.MB from the Faculty of Nursing at Unhas. The session was moderated by Ns. Moh. Syafar Sangkala, MANP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first session, Dr. Yuki Kajiwara presented a topic titled “How Can Nurses Support Behavior Change? Evidence-Based Nursing to Slow CKD Progression.” In the presentation, the speaker focused on explaining an evidence-based nursing approach to support patient behavioral changes aimed at slowing the progression of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), drawing upon findings from their previous research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Abdul Majid presented a topic titled “Adaptive Responses in Chronic Kidney Disease: From Prevention to Hemodialysis Management.” He discussed CKD management from a psychosociological perspective, covering the handling of patients’ adaptive responses across the spectrum of care\u2014from prevention strategies to the management of patients undergoing hemodialysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion was highly interactive during the Q&A session, with participants raising various critical questions. An undergraduate nursing student asked about the appropriate nursing steps and management when a patient decides to discontinue dialysis treatment prematurely. In response, Dr. Yuki Kajiwara offered a comparative perspective on ethical standards and patient care in Japan, contrasting them with healthcare standards in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Mohammed, an international student at the Faculty of Nursing, inquired about the best preventive strategies to curb the incidence of chronic kidney disease at an early stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this guest lecture, the Unhas Faculty of Nursing continues to demonstrate its commitment to expanding international networks, enhancing students’ scientific literacy, and fostering a global discussion forum relevant to the challenges of modern healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
