Makassar \u2014 \u200b\u200bThe Nursing Profession Study Program at the Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University (Unhas), held a community service initiative titled “SAFE Teen” (Sexual Abuse First Emergency for Teen) at SMA Negeri 15 Makassar on Saturday, October 31, 2026. The event, which took place in a classroom at the school starting at 10:30 AM Central Indonesian Time (WITA), was attended by 56 students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SAFE Teen is a community-nursing-based “Community Emergency Care” educational program designed to enhance adolescent preparedness regarding the risks of sexual violence. Students were not only taught to recognize various forms of sexual violence but were also trained in self-protection, reporting procedures, and how to provide a safe initial response when a peer finds themselves in an emergency situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four sessions, four presenters
The material was presented in sequence by four faculty members from the Unhas Faculty of Nursing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. “Recognizing Sexual Violence” \u2013 presented by Nurlaila Fitriani, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Sp.Kep.J \u2013 covered the definitions and various forms of sexual violence, both in-person and online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. “Risks and Impacts of Sexual Violence” \u2013 presented by Sri Bintari Rahayu, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep. \u2013 outlined risk factors, protective factors, and the consequences of sexual violence for adolescents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. “Protecting Yourself and Reporting” \u2013 presented by Indra Gaffar, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep. \u2013 emphasized the importance of consent, maintaining personal boundaries in both the physical and digital worlds, and how to report incidents safely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. “Community Emergency Care” \u2013 presented by the team leader, Wa Ode Nur Isnah Sabriyati, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kes. \u2013 trained students to identify warning signs, apply a four-step early response protocol, and connect victims with appropriate medical, psychological, and legal support services. In addition to the presentation, the team provided educational materials, including posters featuring a QR code that links to a “SAFE Teen” student module. This module contains simulations of early-response scenarios, a digital handbook, and educational videos. Students also completed pre-tests and post-tests to measure changes in their knowledge. The event concluded with a “SAFE Teen” joint declaration by students of SMAN 15 Makassar, the signing of a commitment letter regarding the prevention and handling of sexual violence within the school environment, and the presentation of a commemorative plaque.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    “Adolescents are often the first to know when a peer experiences sexual violence. Therefore, we want them to not only understand the issue but also know what actions to take: protecting themselves, helping their peers safely, and promptly connecting the victim with trusted adults and appropriate support services,” stated Wa Ode Nur Isnah Sabriyati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The school welcomed the initiative. “We fully endorse and support this declaration. Schools must be safe spaces for every student. We intend to strengthen the role of our guidance and counseling teachers and continue our collaboration with the Unhas Faculty of Nursing,” said Drs. Ahmad, M.Pd., Acting Principal of SMAN 15 Makassar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Moving forward: Cross-sectoral Focus Group Discussion (FGD)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The “SAFE Teen” program will be followed by a focus group discussion (FGD) involving high school guidance and counseling teachers from across Makassar, as well as representatives from other sectors, including the Health Office and the Indonesian National Police (Polri). This FGD aims to strengthen referral networks, ensuring that students in need of assistance can be promptly connected to the right services\u2014whether within the school, at healthcare facilities, or through law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Through “SAFE Teen,” the Unhas Faculty of Nursing hopes that adolescents will no longer remain silent when they encounter or witness sexual violence. “Asking for help is not a sign of weakness”\u2014this is the core message that participants took away from the program.
