The community service team at the Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University (Unhas) held a community service program. A series of activities in the form of training and family assistance in caring for the elderly with hypertension. The action was carried out in Parang Village, the working area of the Tamalanrea Jaya Public Health Center, Makassar City, on Wednesday 31 August 2022.
This service activity was attended by approximately 70 residents of Parang Village. The Unhas Faculty of Nursing team initiated the activity, namely Syahrul Said, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kes., PhD; Arnis Puspitha, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kes; Nahdiah Purnamasari, S.Ft., Physio, M.Kes; and Faculty of Nursing students, collaborating with health workers from the Tamalanrea Jaya Health Center, as well as active health cadres in Parang Village. This activity is also a series of the Elderly Posbindu.
In these activities, families are trained in checking blood pressure, checking blood sugar, measuring height and weight, and progressive muscle relaxation exercises. In addition, families are also educated about hypertension, so it can be applied to elderly people with hypertension.
Participants were very enthusiastic about this service activity. Several elderly people and their families asked questions related to hypertension.
Arnis Puspitha expressed his hope that this training and mentoring activity could help and empower families who care for the elderly with hypertension because hypertension is a disease that tends to last a long time, so active participation of the family (caregiver) is needed in caring for the elderly with hypertension to the elderly and independent families in caring for them own health.
