Firdaus Hamid,Ph.D.,Sp.,MK, Indra Gaffar, S.Kep.,Ns.,M.Kep, Andi Baso Tombong, S.Kep.,Ns.,MANP and 2 students: Liya Ameliya S.Kep and Fira Rezky Amaliah S.Kep carried out Patient Safety Education or counseling about patient safety for patients and their families, taking place at the polyclinic installation of the South Sulawesi government hospital namely Haji Makassar Hospital, Laburan Baji Hospital, RSIA Sitti Fatimah, RSIA Pertiwi and in collaboration with the Unit Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) which will be held from July to October 2022. The number of participants who participated in this activity were 65 participants at the Haji Makassar Hospital, 76 participants at the Laburan Baji Hospital. RSUD Haji Makassar and RSUD Laburan Baji carried out 3 patient safety education sessions at the hospital and at RSIA Sitti Fatimah there were 26 participants and RSIA Pertiwi as many as 36 participants who participated in this activity with 2 meetings each providing education about 6 patient safety goals in hospitals.

The six goals of patient safety that are explained and simulated to patients and their families are: 1) information regarding the patient’s identity bracelet; 2) patient and family involvement in nursing care planning; 3) vigilance of health workers in administering drugs to patients; 4) patient and family involvement in high-risk actions; 5) patient and family views of hand washing habits; 6) reduce the risk of falls and injury to the patient. This activity aims to increase public knowledge, in this case, patients and their families in the polyclinic regarding patient safety in hospitals and of course to prevent and reduce the risk of errors and losses that occur to patients during the provision of health services. Patients and families are expected to be able to identify sources of risk and potential hazards as well as preventative measures to reduce the risk of harm to them when receiving treatment or health services at the hospital.

This activity was also coupled with giving pretest and posttest to patients and their families who participated in this activity to measure and compare the extent of participants’ understanding before and after being given education regarding patient safety at the hospital.

After carrying out patient safety education in five hospitals in South Sulawesi Province, we from the community service team will publish a Guidebook on patient safety to hospitals.
