One of the tridharma of higher education is community service. Community service is absolutely carried out by lecturers, in addition to teaching and researching. Community service activities are held every year in various target areas, and for this year some Unhas lecturers directly went down to touch the community of Rappokalling village through the Science and Technology program for the Community (IbM) facilitated by the Hasanuddin University Research and Community Service Institution. This service activity was held for approximately three months, from September to November 2016. The target was health cadres and Tuberculosis patients in the Rappokalling sub-district of Tallo, Makassar City. Five lecturers, two students, and two alumni were involved. This service activity involves lecturers from various multidisciplinary disciplines, coordinated by the team leader Arnis Puspitha, S. Kep., Ns., M.Kes (Nursing), other lecturers including Nurhaya Nurdin, S.Kep., Ns., MN. , MPH and Ilkafah, S. Kep., Ns., M.Kep (Nursing), Umniyah Saleh, S.Psi., M.Psi., Psychologist (Psychology), Sumarheni, S.Si., M.Sc., Apt and Aminullah, S.Si., M.Sc., Apt (Pharmacy).
The program implemented was to provide training and assistance to 20 health cadres who were responsible for TB prevention and treatment programs in five RWs in the Rappokalling village. This cadre accompanied TB patients in their respective RWs. In the mentoring process, TB sufferers are taught how to prevent transmission to other family members and the surrounding environment through the use of masks, spitting in the space provided, effective coughing methods, and deep breathing relaxation techniques. Cadres also teach family members at home about the importance of monitoring anti-tuberculosis drugs (OAT). In addition, people with TB are given help with closed sputum buckets and masks. While the cadres were distributed free T-shirts that read Rappokalling Health Cadre as an attribute they could use when visiting TB home patients. We hope that this mentoring process will continue under the coordination of the Unhas community service team and the local government to improve the community health status of Rappokalling.
